Trails in the Icefields Parkway Area
Prickly Rose
July 2004: The Prickly Rose (Rosa acicularis), also called the Prickly Wild Rose, grows in abundance in Alberta's forests and clearings. This and other flowers line the trail in season as it winds over a forested ridge. The prickly rose, Alberta's provincial flower, and the wild rose (Rosa Woodsii), are very similar; this specimen's five-leaflet groups and slightly paler petals distinguish it from the seven-to-nine leaflet wild rose. Both plants are found in clearings (such as trailsides) or on dry grassy slopes.
